Psychotherapy Explained

Psychotherapy is a way of enabling healing for the emotional and psychological injuries caused through distressing events and relationships that might occur at any time in life.

Through the caring and supportive presence of the therapist, you can begin to focus on the areas which are causing you discomfort and start to form your own insights that lead into new growth, change and healing.

Some Models That I Use

I use a combination of principles like CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). The central principle suggests that when we change the way we view and think about life events, we change the way we behave around those events.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy principles are very helpful. In this model we pay attention to thoughts, awareness of sensations, physical movements, feelings and emotions that arise in our bodies in response to events and thoughts. Bringing together an awareness of these responses can lead to valuable insights, lower levels of anxiety while opening doors for creative change.

Sometimes I use diagrams, charts and drawings that explain how our brains and bodies work together. Understanding that comes through these charts often brings a sense of relief when we understand how we ‘tick’.

In Person Centred Counselling the unique individual person remains at the centre of attention in the counselling, rather than the ‘problem’ you bring becoming the focal point.

Here are some basic ‘families’ of difficulties in which I am able to help.

Abuse:
Emotional, sexual, physical, mental and spiritual abuse.  Bullying, torture

Anxiety states:
Lack of assertiveness, shyness, anxiety and panic attacks, nightmares,
OCD (obsessive compulsive disorders), self harm, suicidal thoughts/attempts, bulimia

Bereavements and losses:
Loss of relationship, death, abortion/miscarriage/termination of pregnancy, road accidents, suicide,
loss of employment/home, pet animal.  Boarding School

Depression:
Anxiety depression, acute/chronic depression, low self confidence,
post natal depression, feelings of worthlessness, guilt and shame.

Stress:
Anger & stress management, relationship conflict, work related issues

Traumas:
Post traumatic stress (PTSD), natural disasters (flood, earthquake, tsunamis etc), transport accidents, rape and sexual assault.  Accidental or intended injury/death to a person or animal

If your issue is not named above, you are welcome to enquire through the contact page.
